Today, the Queens neighborhood of Astoria, which is home to the Museum of the Moving Image and the Queens Council on the Arts, will officially get its own arts district. To be dubbed the Kaufman Arts District by City Council member Jimmy Van Bramer in a naming ceremony at Kaufman Astoria Studios (where shows like “Sesame Street” and “Orange is the New Black” are filmed), the area will stretch from Steinway to 31st Street and from 34th Avenue to 37th Avenue. The New York Times’s Sarah Maslin Nir reported, “The move will codify the cool and, it is hoped, keep the arts mavens and the businesses that cater to them flocking.”
