A guide to services available from Kaufman Astoria Studios
K/A/S Lighting, KAS Music & Sound, The Studio Cafe and the Astoria community, including dining, shopping, and essential services.
A long and glorious history.
Astoria Studios has been making entertainment history for more than 85 years. After making its debut as Famous Players/Lasky on September 20, 1920, (later Paramount Studios), the studio became the home of productions starring Rudolph Valentino, Claudette Colbert, W.C. Fields, The Marx Brothers, Sylvia Sydney, D.W. Griffith, Gloria Swanson, and more.
In the years between the studio's current incarnation as Kaufman Astoria Studios and its earliest days, the property was transferred to the U.S. Army. It became the Signal Corps' Pictorial Center during World War II and helped to launch many careers including those of Paul Newman, Jack Lemmon and Milos Forman.
In the early 1970's the historic facility was saved by a non-profit foundation, now the American Museum of the Moving Image, and designated an American landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. In 1982, development of the Studio was awarded to George Kaufman.
Today, film and television stars such as Woody Allen, Harrison Ford, Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Denzel Washington, John Travolta, Edie Falco & Bill Cosby and the cast of Sesame Street are among the celebrities at work at Kaufman Astoria Studios. The facility boasts seven operating sound stages ranging in size from 3,200 square feet to over 26,000 square feet (the largest stage in the country East of Los Angeles). Plus, under construction a new Stage "K" that will be an 18,000-square-foot stage, 40 feet to the bottom of the walk-on grid and 22,000 square feet of support space.
The environment here is professional, creative, fun and exciting. Perhaps it's the tremendous diversity of the people and projects that come together here - on the set. There's a synergy here that makes things happen. After all, that's entertainment!
We hope you enjoy being part of the KAS "family." We hope that this guide will be a helpful reference for you during your time at KAS. Our safe and peaceful neighborhood is worth exploring. You'll find the best Greek restaurants this side of Athens, four-star Italian cafes, friendly shopkeepers, old fashioned bakeries, delis with the best bagels in New York, and stores you know such as The Gap, Starbucks, etc.
Welcome.
